Christmas in Lancaster, PA: Sight & Sound, Markets & Holiday Magic (2026)

By Best of Lancaster

Lancaster County in December is farmland Christmas at its most sincere: candlelit small towns, steam trains in the snow, and the biggest holiday theatrical production in the country. It's also the year's tightest booking window after October. Here's the complete holiday plan.

The Anchor: Christmas at Sight & Sound

Sight & Sound Theatre's Christmas production is the single biggest December draw in Pennsylvania — a Broadway-scale staging with live animals that fills 2,000 seats show after show from November through early January. Book tickets months ahead, then lock lodging the same day; our Sight & Sound trip guide covers the logistics. The theater is closed Sundays.

Holiday Trains

The Strasburg Rail Road runs beloved holiday trains — Santa rides for the kids and evening runs through the dark farmland. These sell out weeks in advance; book when you book the show. The Railroad Museum across the road adds a warm indoor afternoon (more in the train guide).

Small-Town Christmas

Lititz does small-town Christmas better than anywhere in the county — twinkling Main Street, chocolate and pretzel shops in full holiday mode (Lititz guide). Downtown Lancaster pairs holiday shopping with Central Market's seasonal stalls (Tue/Fri/Sat) and the city's best dinners. Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse decks out its 40 shops through the season — see all the towns in our small towns guide.

A Pennsylvania Dutch Christmas Dinner

December is peak season for the family-style feast — turkey, ham loaf, and the full pie table at Miller's or Good N Plenty. For something more intimate, the small-group lunch inside an Amish family's home runs through the winter and feels especially right at the holidays:

Where to Stay (Book Early)

Sight & Sound weekends compress the county's lodging from November through New Year's. The downtown boutique option puts you near the city's holiday lights and restaurants:

Or compare everything near the theater and farmland:

Midweek visits dodge both the crowds and the rates. For the rest of the seasonal calendar — including October, the county's other peak — see the fall guide and the master things to do list.
